Smarties Makes Smart Move to Paper Packaging

by Megan Arnold June 30, 2021

We’ve talked a lot about sustainability and the switches that various companies are making to try and reduce their overall impact on the environment. One company hopping on that bandwagon is Nestle and their Smarties brand, a chocolate brand distributed in Europe, Canada, and other markets overseas.

Nestle has announced that all Smarties products will now be packaged in recyclable paper packaging, making it the first global confectionary brand to make such a switch. And it’s certainly no small switch! The brand contains 419 SKUs in total, and once the switch is complete, Nestle estimates that it will eliminate nearly 400 metric tons of plastic packaging! That includes 38 million plastic lids and stickers.

But, this change is only one small part of the brand’s overall sustainability efforts. According to Alexander von Maillot, the Global Head of Confectionery at Nestle, the brand intends “to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce its use of virgin plastics by one third in the same period”.

The new packaging will be used on everything in the line, including sharing bags, multi packs, and the giant hexatubes. Each package will be made from sustainably sourced, coated paper, paper labels, or carton board. And, to help consumers with the transition, Smarties will also include instructions on how best to recycle this new packaging.
