Every year, for over 20 years, Pantone has selected a Color of the Year. This process involves a team of experts combing the globe for new color influences. These influences can range from entertainment to new technologies to lifestyles. After the past year we had, they certainly had quite a lot to draw from. So, what’s the 2022 Color of the Year?
For the first time ever, Pantone created a brand new color to add to their wide variety of hues. This year’s Pantone Color of the Year: 2022 is PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri! A soft, elegant pastel purple. Purple is often associated with bravery, spirituality, and wisdom. This shade of periwinkle can be associated with serenity and calmness.
According to Pantone, “As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet, red undertone, Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”
You might be wondering how the color is chosen. Twice a year, Pantone hosts a secret meeting of representatives from various nations’ color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate, they choose a color for the following year. A Pantone representative said, “The team wanted a futuristic color that reflected the global innovation taking place at this moment and had ties to the digital world-the technical aspects of developing the color and replicating it across mediums (printed paper, dyed fabric, digital assets, etc.) followed from there.”
